This meeting is a chance for those involved with blind sailing in Boston to
shape the program for the future. With that in mind, if you have a stake in
what is to come with blind sailing, please respond to the group with any
items you would like to see on the agenda. It will be a moderated meeting so
that we will be kept on task. At this stage, all decisions must be made by
consensus rather than by a single person or subgroup. So far some topics are:
- What do blind sailors specifically want to get out of this program? Think
big. Competing at Worlds/Nationals? Blind-friendly boats & technology? Hiring
professional coaches for a clinic? Sense of community? Think of money as no
object. We should encourage all blind sailors to speak about what they are
getting out of the program now, and what they would like to get out of it in
the future.
- Same as above, but for guides.
- What sort of organizational changes do we need to make to accomplish these
goals? Does it make sense to form a non-profit? What effort would that take,
and who would be willing and able to take it on? Who should be on the board?
- What is our mission statement and does it still reflect our goals?
- How will we address the problems that we see in our organization, as a
team? How can we better distribute responsibilities among leadership (and
among those members who do a great many things to better the program)?
- What is the image of BUBS on the world sailing stage, or in the blind
community? How can we build our image and attract more members? How can we
build our connections with other blind sailing programs in the world?
These are just a few ideas I have heard discussed throughout the summer, and
I know many of you have thoughtful approaches to answering these questions.
In the interest of fostering an open discussion, please respond to the group
what specifically you would like to talk about. Feel free to affirm items
already listed. As we would all probably like to keep the meeting as short as
possible, we cannot guarantee that all items will be discussed. The agenda
will be established by Saturday evening, so that everyone has time to think
about the topics prior to the meeting.
