Hi all, Ronnie Maum and I surveyed Headquarters this morning. We had good overall numbers of birds but somewhat low diversity- especially with water birds. Both the pecan orchards near the overlook and area along the chocolate trail have changed much since our last visit. Most trees, which had been fully leaved up until this last visit, are now bare. This has caused a slight re-distribution of small land birds throughout and an especially notable drop in numbers along the W end of the chocolate trail, except for White-throated Sparrow and a few others. A few spots checked along thickets and fields adjacent the back road were once again busy with sparrows and other small birds for the first time since an earlier movement a few weeks prior. The understory of many areas still remain quite thick and teeming with small birds. I kept track of N Cardinal numbers throughout after seeing several groups of 20 and 30 birds for a total of 110 birds- but only 30 were found within the areas fully surveyed for "sedentary" spp. We will likely change the route up a bit in the weeks to come. Highlights were- Anhinga- 1 female-type Snowy Egret- 8. Including group of 5 with 4 TRHE. Tricolored Heron- 4. Also a slight increase of Black-crowned Night-Heron with 4 Bald eagle- 1-2 ad. Including ad flying with fish. Ruby-crowned Kinglet- 41. Including single group of 20 birds in vine-draped understory thicket of pecan orchard at levee juncture stop. There were at least 4-5 Pine Warblers with this group as well. Numbers of RCKI at overlook and chocolate trail were not especially high. Blue-gray Gnatcatcher- 5. Found as singles and one group of 2. Although I felt 100% sure at the time, I've decided to retract the Barn Swallow record from our Yates tract list yeserday, due to the brevity of the sighting. Good birding y,all Terry
