Hi all, Ronnie Maum and I spent several hours this morning in the Powhatan
area. Red-tailed Hawk numbers seemed low. There were a couple of factors
which certainly contributed to this- more later in a full post-

Best birds were-

Sandhill Crane- 20+ Separate groups headed n/nw early.

Horned Grebe- 1 in shallow, flooded area with/ near Canvasback and other
asst dabblers- quite odd! There were quite a few usual suspect puddle
ducks, including N Pintail, in the area, then 10 CANV nearby. A big portion
of the general Spanish Lake Lowlands area remains flooded.

Red-tailed Hawk- 12- including 3 interesting types= 1 dark/rufous morph
calurus, 1 dark possible harlan's x calurus, then 1 flying in the sun-
we'll have to wait entirely on photos for any further possible assessment.

White Ibis- grps of 30 and 15- ALL juv/ w/1-2 sy birds.

Lapland Longspur- 1 by rattle calls on n end near Messenger Farms- south of
restricted area.

Lark Sparrow- 2-3, including fairly loud song of one indiv given early on.
We didn't bird thickets heavily- but decent numbers of small birds and
sparrows in the areas in which we did. Several Vesper and lots of Savannah
Sparrows were found today but no Fox or Leconte's.

Western Meadowlark- 7. Single group/ including two singing atop a large
tree, also giving "churk" calls and distinctive fast, "wooden" rattles.
Biggest misses aside from a few usuals were both Rusty and Brewer's
Blackbird

Pics and eBird within next day or so.

(:

Terry
