BSG Members, Thought you would enjoy this sighting at Mile Marker 101, in Rapides Parish, north of Fort Buhlow near Alexandria, since there were no terns to report. We were watching an Osprey laboring along with a fairly large fish which appeared silvery so asian carp is a probability. They are now all the way up to Pool 3. Suddenly a hawk swooped into view, challenging the Osprey. This little guy was no larger than one Osprey wing and the fish would have taken the hawk to the ground. I was surprised to discover that an adult Broad-winged Hawk was the challenger, and enjoyed several minutes of dispute over the air space over the Red River. The Osprey swerved, climbed and did all in its power to hang on to the fish as the Broad-winged harassed it. At one point a Turkey Vulture appeared in the same binocular field, just watching out of curiosity, or maybe hoping the Osprey would drop the fish, in what would have been a strange case of cooperative feeding from Osprey, via Broad-winged to vulture.
