Left out 14 Wild Turkey- Crossing Carterville Rd headed East from narrow strip of woods at road edge and deeper-grassed portion of pasture bordering that- some running, some flying. The location approx .2-.3 miles N of 157 On Monday, January 27, 2014 12:15 AM, Terry Davis <trdavis22@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: Hey y'all, Charlie and I spent an enjoyable sunny morning birding portions of Elm Grove quad 01/26 from 0730-1245, including portions of La 71, White House Plantation, Atkins Clark Rd, and J T White Rd. The high pressure that's been around the past several days was a bit stingy with birds but will still managed 81 spp. Highlights were- 11 spp of ducks, including 8 N Pintail and 1 Blue-winged Teal Bald Eagle- 3 adults on pond at White House- including one bird that had caught and was eating a fish. Sharp-shinned Hawk- 1 small, probable male Sora- 3- 2,1 at sep locations a couple of miles apart. Virginia Rail 5- 1,4 as Sora Black-necked Stilt- 2-4. White House- Likely same birds as Hubert had found. The pairs were at either end of the big pond. I'm fairly sure representative of 2 pairs. 5 sandpiper spp, including 3 Spotted and 1 Lesser 'legs. Mourning Dove- 408!! Largest groups of 300 and 150 on White House. Horned Lark- 1 calling flyby- immediate field stages in area not so good for these and LALO this year- although 1 near White House looks pretty good! Rusty Blackbird- 16- 3 sep locations. Charlie got some AWESOME photos of a male!! Brewers in so-so numbers yesterday with 91 representing 5 separate groups. Western Meadowlark- 25 J T White. There was also a single group of 100 EAME on Atkins Clark Lark Sparrow- 2. J T White/ Clark's Lowlights- well, they don't really bother me all that bad- ECDO- 84= 75,9 Mark Wilson and I were up early for a run to finish off Carterville quad E of Plain Dealing. We did just that. FINALLY- a cloudy morning with calm winds and activity going haywire at dawn- especially wrens!! This low area with an upland pine/oak plant-type is richly entrenched with bottoms and creeks feeding Bayou Bodcau. The area has a good mix of woods, cutovers in various stages of succession and a couple of fairly extensive open areas but not many smaller ones. What areas that are not monoculture pine were loaded with birds- although some were lower than others and as usual- we had a few missed. We managed 69 spp for the day. The best notes were- Wood Duck- 2 - fem.slough/pocket on 157 a couple hundred feet N. Ducks are near impossible here away from the mill ponds. Even Bodcau seems downright poor. One needs to know the back waters by boat, I'm guessing. Mallard- 4 = 3f, 1m- as WODU Hooded Merganser,= 3, 4 separate spots, including area w/ ducks above Northern Harrier- 2 creamy/streak-bellied ad f. One at 157 at Morningstar over pasture- another a mile or so to Northeast in a tiny postage-stamp-of-a-cutover. Just one in a woodland quad like this is almost unheard of. Six RSHA and 4 RTHA not too bad for day. Merlin- ad male- La 157 just E of Morningstar. Made a pass at one of a group of 75 SASP- then perched up nearby on barbed wire fence. Am Kestrel- 1 male. At Mott Rd and La 2 Wilson's Snipe- 4. 2, 2 separate low, wet grassy spots on Morningstar, then 157 American Woodcock- 2 evidently done roding, then chippering nearby and overhead as relocating toward woods for the day. More KILL than usual for this area today at 9- 2,2,3,2 HAIRY WOODPECKER- 8. All were singles except one probable pair. First 3 birds (1,2) were within two miles of roadway near Carterville and Morningstar/157. Seemed to respond to brief playback at nearly every 4th stop or so in afternoon portion, with 5 separate singles. Plain Dealing next door is loaded with them, too!! Missed RHWO, though........... Fish Crow- scattered few early, then single group of 280 on Mott .5 mile N of 157. American were very low much of day except 2nd or third stop of day with a group of 75. Brown Creeper- 1. Good for this season. On Farrington. BEWICK'S WREN- 4!! I wouldn't make such a big deal but this is an upland-type quad - at least in terms of plants/ habitat. Just after starting time I heard 3 WIWR singing, 2 within close range and decided to record. Then suddenly 2 BEWR began giving short, chattering calls at the same exact spot. I recorded one (possibly 2) early, then got a good recording of the two on the way back. Another was found along the fencerow a little over .2 miles back to N of there- also recorded. The last bird of the day was at Mott and La 2- also recorded. WINTER WREN- 44!! 19 were found for the a.m. list, 25 in afternoon. Much singing and calling. Somewhat like HAWO (of course in higher numbers), I didn't begin using playback until several birds began calling at 2-3 separate stops early. Late afternoon showed the largest two groups of 5 and 6 at a single location. Golden-crowned Kinglet- 2- along Bodcau Bayou- never thought I'd put this in- even with semi-boldface spp- but this season has been tough!! Rusty Blackbird- 65- several locations, including single group of 60 on Morningstar. Lowlights- realizing that there are NO areas accessible from Timothy Church to the lower mill pond. The remainder of area and water was previously atlased from Cullen quad. We atlased a few smaller roads running East off of Timothy Church. I was glad to be able to make it out the past two days and enjoyed birding with you guys! Good atlasing and birding to all! Terry
