Hi all, Here's the full list from Headquarters earlier today. I tried getting
a photo of the Brewster's and Golden-winged but they were too active- chasing
like Tennessee or Nashville in the willow tops. Speaking of Nashville or
Tennessee, I'm fairly surprised at least one of those two spp haven't yet
shown......Stan Chapman also reports an adult Bald Eagle recently at the
overlook.

Red River National Wildlife Refuge- Headquarters Unit, Bossier, US-LA
Sep 15, 2013 6:40 AM - 10:15 AM
Protocol: Traveling
1.0 mile(s)
Comments:     1 observer, 3 hrs, 35 min (0640-1015) 1 mile. Clear, 63 degrees,
wind calm/trace N-e beginning, clear high/thin clouds, wind ~5+, just barely
heavy enough to cause trouble getting vocal recordings of birds during survey,
clear, 75 degrees, wind light E/ variable ending.
The Brewster's and Golden-winged were an amazing find this morning. A few other
warblers, such as Ovenbird and 2 Magnolia, among other usual suspects, made for
an added touch to the day. Early flight consisted of mainly American Robin in
smaller numbers to W/ N-w and a few Indigo Bunting moving same way as well.
Egret roost still impressive, although somewhat less so- except for Snowy,
which increased. There are also good numbers of lingering Green Heron + 11-13
Roseate Spoonbill and a good handful of shorebirds just off the overlook. A
noticeable jump in both Black Vulture and N Cardinal along the Chocolate trail
was good, along with noticeable increase in Indigo and 3 Painted Bunting there.

mid-lake roost as I arrived.

Snowy Egret  68     43, 25. Nos likely higher. Southwest corner a bit too

indiv observed, photo'd and giving "pip' calls was hy.

Eastern Phoebe  1     1, 0

than at Stoner or Cane's Landing.
Ovenbird  1     0, 1. Fos. In r-l dogwood on W end of trail. Individual giving
a very rich KEWA-like chip when first found. Tried photo'ing but was furtive in
the dense dogwoods. Let go silent before attempting to record.../-: I often
feel it's a bit too much trying to do both!

Northern Waterthrush  5     1, 4. In  willows and Cephalanthus on Chocolate

Golden-winged Warbler  2     0, 2.  No hybrids possible on list so included
"Brewster's with Golden-winged. Golden-winged was ad fem or hym. In low, moist
area between back ponds. Taller willows with viney, dense understory approx 150
yards W of E end of Chocolate trail. Brief, ~30 second view overall, but
certain of identification- with Brewster's and Yellow Warbler. Small, chunky
warbler, pale grayish below and gray above with bold yellow wing patch and
yellow forecrown. Face pattern with somewhat diffuse but heavy patterning of
dusky- black on throat sandwiching broad crisp whitish malar between dark
auriculars and line through eye into lores. The Golden-winged and Brewster's
were both very active and were observed foraging along in the tops of three
separate willows before crossing the path to the S side of trail. They were
observed giving chase on 4 or more occasions, rapidly circling the tops of the
willows giving distinct thin and noticeably
 finely buzzy flight calls.
The "Brewster's appeared to be a 1st generation male, prob ad. It was observed
for at least one minute of overall time, more frequently landing within sight
in the willow tops than the Golden-winged. Small, chunky warbler grayish above
with bold, double, whitish wingbars. Whitish below but with large diffuse
yellow patch/ wash across upper breast. Heavy, dark-blackish line through eye
and yellow forecrown.

ponds. All seen again female-type
Northern Parula  1     0, 1. Much chip calls, briefly seen
Magnolia Warbler  2     0, 2. One prob hy male in willows- extensive but blurry
streaking at sides, then one indiv moving quicky through willows- yellow below,
heavy dark band on whitish tail.

Yellow Warbler  1     0, 1. With GWWA, Brewster's. Stayed put in same willow as
other two were chasing across separate willows, then continuing S w/ group as
they crossed the trail.
Summer Tanager  4     1, 3. All seen fem-type
Northern Cardinal  42     8, 34. No increase/ slightly less at overlook but big
jump in detection along Chocolate.
Blue Grosbeak  2     2, 0. Single grp of ad m near levee just N of overlook.
Indigo Bunting  31     3, 28. Separate flybys early to W, then scattered groups
along Chocolate, w/ 20+ at same area in Cephalanthus, sans the fem Dickcissel.
Painted Bunting  3     0, 3. Including one ad male, also giving brief whisper
song, 1 almost brilliant green female, then one calling bird I felt safe
separating from Indigo.

Red-winged Blackbird  20     20, 0. First group of Fall adult males barraging
feeders at overlook.
