Hi all, There were some new ones for the season and some changes in overall 
nubers for Jeff and I today. 

 

Red River NWR--Bayou Pierre Unit Yates Tract, Red River, US-LA

Comments:     2 observers, 5 hrs, 20 mins, 5 miles. 77 degrees, cloudy (had 
rained very recently before arriving), light south beginning, ~84 degrees, 80% 
cloudy, wind 8-10 with brief stronger gusts ending. Jeff and I found some new 
arrivals today. Some of the better ones were 2 Mourning Warbler, 2 Wilson's 
Warbler, Black-bellied Plover and Semipalmated and Western Sandpiper- also 3 
tern spp. The single Field Sparrow was still giving incessant partial song near 
the cememery, Bell's Vireo singing incessantly there. Good nos of Alder 
Flycatcher remaining- the latter giving frequent song as well

Northern Pintail  2- fem/type, unit 5 -FOS
Green-winged Teal  5     3 in 5, 2 in 2- female FOS
Pied-billed Grebe  4     barn pond
Great Egret  19     About 50/50 early flyovers, most s/se, rest units
Snowy Egret  52     One early flyby nnw, rest units
Little Blue Heron  11     1 ad, 1 juv sse early, rest were all hy at units
Tricolored Heron  3     barn pond
Cattle Egret  156     Few early flyovers, most singles sse and 20 n, rest units
Green Heron  2     barn pond, 1 juv, 1c
White Ibis  80     ~10% juvenile, some early flybys s/se, rest units
Turkey Vulture  1
Red-shouldered Hawk  1     juv at units
Common Gallinule  3     barn pond
Black-bellied Plover  1     unit 2- mostly alternate but molting ad. Notably 
warmer-brownish back on this indiv- but bold whitish vent. Called frequently 
about 1-2 times a minute during a final look at this unit on our way out.
Killdeer  20     2 early, rest units
Black-necked Stilt  77     70 in 2, 7 in 3- Noted resurgence after nos dropping 
off- from memory, unlike last fall
Spotted Sandpiper  2     1 ad at barn pond, 1 in 2
Solitary Sandpiper  13     units, most appeared to be fresh and very brownish 
juvs
Greater Yellowlegs  14     Most in unit 5. A late first noted increase! No 
extremely close views- several seen fairly closely possible h.y.
Lesser Yellowlegs  83     Units 2,3,5-most appeared  worn adults
Semipalmated Sandpiper  12     9 in unit 2 (6 h.y., 3 worn ad.) 3 ad in 5
Western Sandpiper  2     unit 2- appeared worn adult
Least Sandpiper  196     1 gp of 10 crisp/reddish juv in unit 5, rest worn ad, 
some near basic- units 2,3,5
Pectoral Sandpiper  355     !! Units 2,3,5
Stilt Sandpiper  9     8 in unit 2 (6 juv, 2 ad with faint belly barring 
remaining), 1 juv in unit 5
Long-billed Dowitcher  1     1 near basic in unit 2
Caspian Tern  2     1 "zack" ing ad w/squealing prob hy in tow to north/e over 
unit 7- FOS
Black Tern  3     1 ad, 2 juv working over units 2 and 3.
Forster's Tern  1     basic indiv over unit 5- FOS here.
Eurasian Collared-Dove  2     including 1 high n/e over levee bend
Mourning Dove  9
Inca Dove  1     Single bird calling at usual location- small side street with 
scattered trailers just sw of farmhouse.
Eastern Screech-Owl  1     401 just e of barn
Ruby-throated Hummingbird  6     1,1,2,1,1
Red-bellied Woodpecker  10     first numbers in awhile!
Downy Woodpecker  4
Eastern Wood-Pewee  1     decline
Alder Flycatcher  14     Good numbers in willows and roughleaf dogwood stands- 
quite a bit of song- usually only one bird giving full song at locations with 
multiples calling- or by song as singles early. Recorded as 1,1,1,4,2,1,4- 3 
indivs seen well and calling appeared to be worn adults

Least Flycatcher  2     1 h.o. fairly rapid "wit"-series near farmhouse. 1 
calling, then observed hy at levee bend next to banding station.

Eastern Kingbird  32     Gps of 2-10 mostly early and to e and s
Scissor-tailed Flycatcher  1
White-eyed Vireo  15     noted increase
Bell's Vireo  1     Brief, but repetitive bouts of song at Cemetery rd/levee

Northern Mockingbird  17     Another increase. Mostly widespread gps of 2-3. At 
least two singles fairly high south.
Brown Thrasher  3     small gp near cemetery
European Starling  10     1 farmhouse, 9 n over units (the latter slightly odd)
Northern Waterthrush  4     as 1,2,1 barn pond and units
Mourning Warbler  2     FOS- ad female in grape covered thicket surrounded by 
willows, box elder maple, rl-dogwoods and green ash on west end of barn pond, 
ad male in lone persimmon to ne of levee just east of levee bend, also observed 
moving through surrounding giant ragweed, Johnson grass and Brazilian vervain.

Kentucky Warbler  1     h.o. chip-series again at levee bend
Common Yellowthroat  10     second noted increase- about 50/50% call or 
female/hy and song by males.
Yellow Warbler  6     2,2,1,1. All seen were female. Observed in g ragweed, 
hackberry- female observed eating ripe fruit, g ragweed and pecan
Wilson's Warbler  2     FOS- 1 well-capped indiv, but with blurry edges noted 
especially to rear- prob hym?- in hackberry on west end of barn pond ( near f 
MOWA), another similarly-plumaged indiv at levee bend/airstrip in Baccharis.
Yellow-breasted Chat  8     All singles but 2 at Cemetery area- several seen, 
most giving "tocking"-series- 1 giving brief song along levee just n of house. 
Most in grape-covered thickets and shrubby growth
Eastern Towhee  6     3 in thickets at levee bend (2 call, 1 song) 3 cemetery 
(2 call, 1 song)
Field Sparrow  1     Chipping and giving shorter versions of song- less 
rising/fast trill at end- same location as previously- second growth with much 
grass and few vines
Summer Tanager  1     401 by call
Northern Cardinal  30
Blue Grosbeak  3     1c,1f,1f
Indigo Bunting  39     most in Johnson grass, also in moist soil area, gps of 
2-6, foraging along e/se- "extravagant" flight-type song by 1 male
Dickcissel  7     Several calling singles overhead and scattered singles low
Red-winged Blackbird  26     20 in 7- quite a few males included, 6 fem in 6.
Common Grackle  3     single gp commuters
Orchard Oriole  4     all fem-type- 1,1 early to s-e, then 2 in thickets at 
levee bend/banding area.
Baltimore Oriole  5     4 by call, brief song by 1 male early on 401
House Sparrow  4     Farmstead at 401 and 1
