Here's another short trip taken to Mibermel Farms and nearby rookery by Hubert and I after we left Yates yesterday afternoon. 16 Roseate Spoonbill (with many adults included) was notable. Mibermel/ Hwy 1 portions of Natchitoches CBC, Natchitoches, US-LA Aug 10, 2013 12:10 PM - 1:30 PM Protocol: Traveling 4.0 mile(s) Comments: with Terry Davis from Hy 1 s of Powhatan thru Mibermel Plantation, planted in soybeans this year, to irrigation water holding lake to east, with rice starting on east side. 93 degrees light s breeze, 20 % clouds, with highest roseatte spoonbill count yet this fall up here. Rookery still operating with preponderance of Little Blue Herons, fully feathered, but not yet fully fledged. We also checked several bridges on the way home from Yates last week. All oddball nests except one appeared to be unfinished Cliff Swallow nests. The odd nest was mostly on top of a sign used as a support under a flat part of the bridge and bulged out from the support at the outer edge. Overall shape more-so suggested Barn but mud clumps were heavily and concentrically dabbed more like Cliff. We checked the bridge at the Powhatan exit on I-49 yesterday afternoon. Lots of Cliff and very few Barn were only nests found there. 26 species Great Blue Heron 1 Great Egret 2 Snowy Egret 2 Little Blue Heron 156 90 + % juv Tricolored Heron 4 All seen well were juv Cattle Egret 40 also juv Green Heron 2 Black-crowned Night-Heron 2 1 juv, 1 prob 2y nearly in full adult pumage Yellow-crowned Night-Heron 7 Most juv, a few ad. 3 at hwy 1 entrance, 4 at rookery. La. or are we learning to scope appropriate groups of cliff swallows for cave swallows in the early fall? Just before leaving, we grabbed a good position from the S-w so we could scope some of the fairly distant birds arriving in the tops of the trees. There was a single tree somewhat away from the largest group tree which contained a few Cliff, 5 Cave juvenile and 1 Tree. The Cave swallows and Tree Swallow observed were at the outer edges of the branches near the top of the tree. They were too far for identifiable photos but undertail covert detail also seen well in the good light from our viewing angle also proved correct. I took pics from a closer angle but worse light during our last trip here. After finding the CASW at Yates, I looked back at those pics closer. All that can be seen well appear to be Cliff. The numbers of swallows (mostly Cliff) swelled quickly in our last 30 minutes there yesterday, rising from 12 or so individuals to 250. Someone now needs to check this roost around 3:30 p.m. or later!!
