The lake had a few good ones for Charlie, Hubert and I Sunday afternoon. Best 
finds might be a toss-up between Eared Grebe and Common Tern. The previous list 
sent was from Sunday morning, rather than yesterday- as I'm pretty sure I'd 
written that in the intro before sending.

Comments:     Birded with Charlie Lyon and Hubert Hervey. 3 observers, 5 hrs 
(1:40-6:40 p.m.), 16 miles  Entire lake survey by boat, including several edge 
stops for migrating warblers, etc. Cloudy, 73 degrees, wind light N-e 
beginning. Cloudy, 74 degrees, wind 5+ N-e ending. Best birds were Eared Grebe, 
2 Common Tern, 3 Osprey, latish CLSW, Franklin's Gull and Black-throated Green 
Warbler numbers- although the latter are fairly typical at this time. American 
Coot numbers rising with scattered groups. Heron roost at Buzzard Island still 
quite active. However, we weren't able to linger late and see the real numbers 
at Buzzard Island.

Wood Duck  4     Scatt singles, including 2 males
Mallard (Domestic type)  95     Scatt groups
Blue-winged Teal  17     E end at Cotton Pocket- including odd 
xanthistic-plumged? female. Notably pale compared to others with noticeable 
amount of white at outer edges of tail and more contrastingly light/dark- 
flecked sides.

Ruddy Duck  1     Fem-type- E end.
Pied-billed Grebe  8     1,2,3,2 scatt, mostly E end to mid lake
Eared Grebe  1     ad. FOS here. E end- just N-e of Cotton Pocket.
Double-crested Cormorant  165     Including early roost count of 100.
Anhinga  1     fem. Mid lake N side.
Great Blue Heron  18     Scatt
Great Egret  43     Low numbers scatt across lake, 10 coming into roost early.
Snowy Egret  19     Mostly W end, then roost.
Little Blue Heron  5     2 ad, 3 juv. West end and roost.
Tricolored Heron  2     1 indiv early by Hubert at Yacht club, 1 juv on point 
mid-lake, N side.
Cattle Egret  385     At and arriving to roost. We left there early. Numbers 
would have exceeded 6-700 if there late.
Black Vulture  1
Turkey Vulture  6
Osprey  3     2, 1 E end.
Red-shouldered Hawk  1     E end.
American Coot  243     Scatt groups of 2- 136. Most  groups of 13-20
Killdeer  3     Hatchery
Franklin's Gull  2     One definite 1st winter. Single group to moving to E at 
mid-lake, slightly to W.
Common Tern  2     1st winter. Associating highish E/ N-e with 5 FOTE. 
Individuals notice with capped effect high overhead when briefly looking down, 
etc. Common Tern playback used which caused immediate response of two 
individuals breaking from group, circling lower and giving "kip' calls. Carpal 
bar/ leading dark edge of arm/wing on one individual seen well, capped effect 
and by association and response to playback for the other. We also tried 
playback of FOTE voc's with the two, which had no effect.


Forster's Tern  5     Basic plumage, including one still in juvenile plumage.
Mourning Dove  1     Flyby hatchery.
Barred Owl  1     E end. Odd location!
Belted Kingfisher  7     Including at least 4 on W end.
Red-bellied Woodpecker  10     Scatt 1-3
Downy Woodpecker  4     2,1,1
Northern Flicker  5     Scatt 1-2
Pileated Woodpecker  1     Fortney Bayou.
Eastern Wood-Pewee  1     E end, S side. In group in Kudzu-covered lower growth 
edging pine woods on hillside -including 2 ad f PIWA, 1 ad m HOWA, 3 B-t Green 
Wa, ad m BAWW, RCKI , BRTH and WEVI.
Eastern Phoebe  6     Scatt 1-2
White-eyed Vireo  1
Philadelphia Vireo  1     Fortney Bayou- in willows/ variable.
Blue Jay  9     Scatt 1-3
American Crow  1     Calls- W end.
Fish Crow  4     2,2. E end and Mid-lake, slightly E.
Northern Rough-winged Swallow  11     5 hatchery, rest scatt singles to E/ N-e 
with Barn Swallow groups
Barn Swallow  177     Groups of 5- 100 working E/N-e directly into wind at 
beginning of survey. Mid lake E- S side.
Cliff Swallow  1     Lone bird with Barn Swallow groups to E/N-e
Carolina Chickadee  10
Tufted Titmouse  6
White-breasted Nuthatch  1     In pines at gate to Yacht Club
House Wren  4     3,1. Group at brushy-viny edge at DCFL locality.
Carolina Wren  7     2,1,1,2
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher  3     1,2
Ruby-crowned Kinglet  1
Eastern Bluebird  6     Single group at DCFL site.
Brown Thrasher  2     1,1
Northern Mockingbird  10     5 at Yacht Club/ hatchery, scattered singles.
European Starling  75     Yacht/ hatchery
Black-and-white Warbler  1     ad m. First announced presence in response to 
screech-owl playback giving dry, hard "sstit"
Common Yellowthroat  3     Including female and hy male in Eleagnus at 
hatchery. Very low here, too!!
Hooded Warbler  1     ad m
American Redstart  1     Fem-type.
Pine Warbler  5     1,2,2. Song from Y-c pines, 2 ad female, 2 brownish hy 
females
Yellow-rumped Warbler (Myrtle)  3     Single group of prob f at DCFL site
Black-throated Green Warbler  7     Found as 3,1,3. Most well-marked males or 
ad f/ hy male. Two hy females.
Blue Grosbeak  1     Female calling high S over P lot.
Red-winged Blackbird  87     Groups 75, 12 to E
Common Grackle  35     15, 20
House Finch  4     YC, then DCFL site at mid-lake N side.
