Kevin Hamed pointed out to me a Hairy Woodpecker on the ground at Steele
Creek Park Nature Center, Bristol, TN last Wed. It was hopping, with some
aid from its wings, inspecting the black walnuts we had scattered in the yard
for the squirrels. I have in the past also seen Downy Woodpeckers feed on
the ground on black walnut 'tailings'. We also have a few Northern Flickers
at the Nature Center that regularly feed in the lawn, jabbing their bills
into the dirt, presumably after grubs.
