Today (15 June) while birding in Shady Valley, TN, Ron Harrington and I found a road kill Barred Owl at mile marker 6 of TN Rt. 133 which is in the Beaverdam Stream gorge of the Cherokee National Forest, Johnson County. In mid-afternoon after Ron had returned me to my car at Shelley's on U.S. 421, I found one of the first road kill Eastern Screech Owls I have seen in a long time. It was a brown morph and was in the north bound lane towards Bristol in the vicinity of The Center, where the Bristol Bird Club has had its annual banquet for the past couple of years. This is in Sullivan County. Road kill screech owls were a common occurrence in this region throughout the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's but seem to have diminished greatly in the past 10 years. I think I have previously expressed on this list that I am concerned this is a reflection of the declining population of the species in our region. Let's go birding.. Wallace Coffey Bristol, TN
