Adult female Rufous Hummingbird captured at Musick's Campground. It flew back to the hummer feeder within 30 minutes after being released, according to Mae Musick. Bander Mark Armstrong places hummingbird feeder in cage. The hummer entered cage to feed and Mark closed the door with a long strand of fishing line. It took about 3 to 4 minutes for the bird to enter when the cage was in place. It was a delight to find the bird had already been captured by another hummer bander somewhere in the US and bore a USF&WS band. We'll soon learn more about this bird's travels and history. Below left is the tell-tell tail feathers which are one feature of this bird's identification marks. It is not possible to tell an adult female Rufous from an adult female Allen's in the field.
