Two ornithologists, who have close ties with and have participated in activities of the Bristol Bird Club, have made major contributions to the recent supplement to the American Ornithologists' Union Check-List of North American Birds. This is the official decisions and announcements regarding the names and classification of North American birds. James Van Remsen of the Museum of Natural Science, Louisiana State University, is a member of about a dozen prominent American ornithologists who serve on the AOU's Committee on Classification and Nomenclature-North and Middle America. Rob Moyle, son of BBC members John and Polly Moyle, has significant papers published which were cited by AOU in making its decisions. Rob is an Assistant Professor Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, along with the Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Research Center at the University of Kansas. He is the assistant curator in the area of systematic ornithology. Kansas has one of the best university ornithological collections in America. Rob took part in the 2004 Bristol Christmas Bird Count. He was the Chapman Postdoctoral Fellow with the American Museum. His father is a Vice-President of BBC and Rob's parents live at Kingsport. Rob grew up in New York state. Rob was several times cited in the supplement. He was also cited as the lead author on the following papers referenced by AOU: Moyle, R. G., R. T. Chesser, R. O. Prum, P. Schikler, and J. Cracraft. 2006. Phylogeny and evolutionary history of Old World suboscine birds (Aves: Eurylaimides). American Museum Novitates 3544:1-22. Moyle, R. G., R. T. Chesser, R. T. Brumfield, J. G. Tello, D. J. Marchese, and J. Cracraft. 2009. Phylogeny and phylogenetic classification of the antbirds, ovenbirds, woodcreepers, and allies (Aves: Passeriformes: Furnariides). Cladistics 25:386-405. Nirschl, R., and R. Snider. 2010. First record of Bare-throated Remsen, a leading North American ornithologist and highly respected in the field of classification and nomenclature, has participated in several BBC Christmas bird counts and also was a featured speaker for BBC, presenting a eulogy to his friend Roger Tory Peterson on the day and at the time of Peterson's funeral in Olde Lyme, Conn. It was a BBC invitation field trip at Musick's Campground on South Holston Lake and the eulogy was offered under a pine tree at the campground while a large group of area birders attended. FIFTY-SECOND SUPPLEMENT TO THE AMERICAN ORNITHOLOGISTS' UNION CHECK-LIST OF NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS summarizes decisions made between 1 April 2010 and 15 April 2011 by the AOU's committee. The paper appears in the The Auk which is published this month.
