Ron Harrington's Bald Eagle account reminded me of my own sighting. It was in
September, but worth sharing on this new forum (thanks for including me!)

My wife and I were driving along Highway 16 north, north of Marion, Va., on one
of the latter Saturdays in September, 2001, at about 9:15 a.m.. Nearing the
entrance to Hungry Mother Park as we drove along the lake shore, I noticed
movement just above the road a few yards ahead. It took a second to sort out
what I was seeing. Three crows...chasing a mature Bald Eagle just above my eye
level, along the highway. The eagle banked hard to the left, seeming to follow
the turn-off and entrance to the park office. By then, I'd stopped on the road,
exclaimed to my wife (with an excited expletive or two) what I'd seen. She
picked up the big bird and its pursuers and we began driving again, following
the chase past the park office and to the visitor's center. The eagle took a
perch some 20 feet high in a tree at the edge of woods, where it sat for
several seconds, affording us a really nice look. I had a camera in the back of
the vehicle, but didn't want to disturb the moment in a mad dash for it. I
would not have had time to get a picture as the eagle soon took off, free now
of the crows, and flew southward along the ridge above Highway 16, low above
the trees, until it was out of sight.

Seems probable, from the time of the sighting and absence of other sightings,
that the eagle was in southward migration and roosted for the night near the
lake. Seems probable, too, that I shall never forget that chance encounter.
