Plans to take cattle off The Nature Conservancy Bogs in Shady Valley, TN last month did not go so well but the last young animals were removed today (Monday, 15 December 2014) from Orchard Bog. The cattle owner had trouble getting the animals at the Orchard Bog to come in for him and extra effort and time was spent getting them rounded up. Animals had been removed earlier from Quarry Bog. A birder notified The Tennessee Nature Conservancy earlier this year that unexpected cattle were encountered in Orchard Bog in Shady Valley and that experience was not only surprising but possibly dangerous to visitors. The Conservancy had informed birders more than a year ago that a fence had been constructed at Quarry Bog for the purpose of grazing cattle on that property and that birders and others should take special care to keep your eyes open and be safe. Gabby Lynch, Program Manager for The Nature Conservancy in Shady Valley, said the cattle at Orchard Bog were there due to a breach of a nearby fence and not expected to be where they were encountered. The cattle are used to try and control an invasive canary grass and to allow the Bog Turtle habitat to develop as needed. The cattle are removed in winter so as not to have excessive disturbance of the soil during the winter There are no cattle expected to be in either Orchard Bog or Quarry Bog until next spring.
