Received a couple of phone calls since Friday about the fledgling Broad-winged
Hawks and
the fledged Bald Eagles. The hawk photo above was taken this weekend.

Jim and Lisa Wright, of Colonia Heights at Kingsport TN, reported that the
juvenile hawks which
recently fledged, are revealing interesting behavior. Jim called to say that
while they have been
growing and are quite large, they are still being fed in the nest. He reported
that when one of
the adults leaves the nest area, the two young chase after them and often
disappear out of
sight thru the woods and can be seen going down the steep ridge. However,
every now and
then they fly into the nest and then a parent bird will arrive and place food
in the nest for them
to feed. He says they are starting to struggle with each other over the food.
The parent will
perch nearby and watch them feed. When the parent leaves, the young take out
to follow.

Bob Cheers called Saturday to tell me that at least one of the fledgling Bald
Eagles from the
Riverside Rd. nest on the South Fork Holston River upstream from Bluff City in
Sullivan Co.,
is still returning to the nest and has been seen perched just above the nest.
He believes the
bird is returning for a parent to bring food. This behavior is not unlike the
Broad-wings.

Let's go birding . . . .
