With two weeks remaining to register by the May 11th
deadline for the Tennessee Ornithological Society / Virginia
Society of Ornithology 2012 Joint State Meeting at Johnson
City, TN, May 18-20, the turnout to date from registrations
received shows an amazing balance of participation from
both states.

The percentages of participants listed below is strange when
you look at the difference in state organization they represent
as compared to where the birders live.

Much of the difference is found in the fact that more participants
than you would think are residents of Southwest Virginia but
members of TOS and not VSO. It is likely that a smaller percentage
of all VSO members in the state are attending and a larger percentage
of all TOS members in the state. The states each have different ways
to join the state societies. Virginia has a larger population base, some
local affiliations are larger than any chapters in Tennessee and VSO
may have a larger statewide membership than TOS.

Here is the breakdown as of Saturday night:

50% Participants TOS Members
48% Participants VSO Members
  2% Neither

53% Participants Virginia Residents
41% Participants Tennessee Residents
  6% Neither

It is also interesting that the number of birders who have reservations
at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Convention Center and checking in Thurs.
May 17 in order to get out at 7 a.m. for Friday field trips is increasing
and the turnout is heavier than expected.
