Bristol Area Birders: A hummingbird, apparently of the genus "Selasphorus," has been at a feeder in Washington Co., VA since August ! The bird is frequenting a home about 1.5 mile northeast of I-81, Exit 7, near Bristol. This is more than a mile from the site where an Allen's Hummingbird was captured and banded Dec. 26, 1997 and where a failed attempt was made to capture and band another Selasphorus last February. The Allen's is the only Virginia record for that species. I observed the bird for two hours this morning (11/20) and watched it at close range. Several times it spread its tail, offering a good view of the color pattern but nothing definitive that would determine if it is a Rufous or Allen's. It does not appear to be an adult male of either species. No arrangements will be made for birders or the public to see this bird unless it turns out to be something other than a Rufous. If it is captured and banded and determined to be a more rare hummer, then the possibility of visitors will be considered. Let's go birding.....
