Allow us to share a few tips for many of you who plan to take part in the upcoming three-day TOS Shady Valley Foray, Johnson Co., TN, June 10-11-12. Stay hydrated at all times. The TOS Shady Valley Foray sponsors will provide FREE bottle water at the foray HQ located on Orchard Road in the stone house at Orchard Bog Preserve of The Nature Conservancy. If you are among those who are hiking/birding most of the day along many miles of high elevation mountain trails, we encourage you to take 2 to 4 bottles, depending on you estimated need. Do not come up short ! We will begin with three cases of water and replenish as needed during the weekend. Water from the faucet's at the HQ building should not be used for drinking water....it has not yet been tested. For refreshing relaxation between events or to simply stop and enjoy your fellow birders, you will find an abundant supply of soft drinks on ice -- they are FREE also. You will also find many bags of cookies, chips and dips for your enjoyment. Walkie-talkie radios operating on the Family Radios Service (FRS) are easily and cheaply available at Wal-Mart's, Kmart's, pharmacies and similar outlets. The foray field operation channel will be Ch. 5. This limits running all over trying to exchange simple instructions or communications with your party or the foray leadership. In addition, there are at least two cell towers in Shady Valley. You may likely have easy and good service. That will allow communications with others who have their cells and for any needed service -- including 911. Cell phones among leaders: Rick Knight 423-483-4204 Roy Knispel 920-203-0332 Wallace Coffey 423-360-2532 Medical clinics, three close hospitals with good emergency rooms and two nearby hospitals which are trauma center are available. Authorities can quickly call wings air medical or med flight choppers into service as they deem needed. A 24-hour lighted medical flight landing pad is available at the Shady Valley Volunteer FD on US 421.
