EXTREME ROAN ADVENTURES
August 1st, 2009
The first annual “Extreme Roan Adventures” naturalist rally for kids will take 
place on August 1st at Roan Mountain State Park. We have an exciting lineup of 
nature activities for kids of all ages. This event is being put on by the 
Friends of Roan Mountain and will include walks, talks, live animals, fossils, 
games and crafts. 
 
At Shelter 3 (by the campground)
9:00 am – Bird Walk with Rob Biller
            Salamander Walk with Kevin Hamed
10:00 am – Stream Ecology Walk with Gary Barrigar
            Butterfly Walk with Nancy Barrigar and Aubrey Abernethy
            Nature Scavenger Hunt with Jennifer Bauer
11:00 am – Tracking walk with Marty Silver
            Geology Walk with Jeremy Stout 
            Ecology Food Web with Nora Shubert
            9 am – 12 pm - Games and crafts with Brad Jones and Janet Brown
        
    At The Conference Center
11 am – 2 pm – Live Birds of Prey with Bay’s Mountain Park
            Live Reptiles and Amphibians with Jacob Young
            Fossils with Greenville 4H
12 pm – Lunch (hotdogs, chips, gatoraide and water will be available)
            Awards and Prizes
1 pm – Presentation and live critters with Wynnwood Wildlife Rehab
2pm – Meet to carpool to Carver’s Gap for a hike on the balds
            Ages 13 and up can take a moderate hike with Nora Shubert to see 
restoration project goats  
            Younger kids can take an easy hike with Janet Brown to explore 
nature on the balds
 
The event is free but pre-registration is required by July 28th.
Children must be accompanied by adults
 
The purpose of Friends of Roan Mountain is to foster greater awareness and 
understanding of the natural, historical, and cultural significance of Roan 
Mountain. Members support the organization's interpretive and educational 
programs and activities which are designed to accommodate a wide range of 
interests. Membership is open to amateur naturalists, scientists, agency 
personnel, teachers, students, or anyone who has an interest in and love for 
the Roan.
