Steele Creek Park Nature Center is hosting its 5th annual Wildlife Weekend
this weekend.
The schedule of events is below.  I hope to see you there.

Wildlife Weekend - Schedule of Events


Friday, October 18


7:00 - 8:00 PM              Where have all the Quail Gone? - Chris
Wolkonowaski, State Director of Quail Unlimited and Wildlife Biologist, will
present a program on the history of quail in Tennessee and what landowners
can do to help quail.  If you enjoy quail or are a landowner this program is
for you!



8:00 - 9:00 PM              SEARCH FOR THE IVORY-BILLED WOODPECKER - Rick
Knight was a member of a six person team to spend a month in the swamps of
Louisiana looking for the presumed, extinct Ivory-billed Woodpecker.  Rick
will share his experiences with the expedition and what was learned.



9:00 - 9:30 PM              Campfire Program - NOCTURNAL NOISES -Bring a
blanket and your listening ears.  We will sit around the campfire while
enjoying some snacks as we listen for owls and other nocturnal animals.



Saturday, October 19


9:00 AM - 7:00 PM       EXHIBIT AREA - Organizations represented include:
Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency, National Wildlife Federation, Defenders
of Wildlife, Sierra Club, Bristol Bird Club, The Nature Conservancy,
Tennessee Valley Authority, Natural Resource Conservation Service, North
American Native Fish Association, and many others.



8:00 - 9:00 AM             BIRD HIKE -             Kevin Hamed will lead
this exciting walk looking for birds, especially migratory birds passing
through.  Bring binoculars.



9:15 - 10:15 AM           BIRD BANDING - Richard Lewis, US Fish and Wildlife
Service Licensed Bird Bander, will be conducting bird banding in the
grassland area of the park.  Participants have the chance to observe many
species of birds up-close as well as the scientific data collected from the
birds.  Bird banding will continue throughout the morning for participants
to view. (Meet at the grassland)



10:30 - 11:30 AM          BATS - This interesting program will shed light
onto these often misunderstood animals.  Many of the Endangered mammals we
have in this area are bats.  Come learn more about these creatures.



12:00 -12:45 PM           Friends of Steele Creek Nature Center & Park
Luncheon for Presenters, Exhibitors, and Volunteers.




The Nature Center is excited to have Nationally Recognized Orchid expert

and author Stanley Bentley!

1:00 - 2:00 PM      ORCHIDS OF THE SOUTHERN APPALACHAIN MOUNTAINS - Stanley
Bentley, nationally recognized author, will present a program on the beauty
of our native orchids.  The slide shown during the presentation will be the
most stunning pictures of orchids many people have ever seen.  Mr. Bentley
will be signing copies of his book after the program.



2:30 - 3:30 PM              BRING BACK OUR NATIVE FISH - Pat Rakes,
Conservation Fisheries, Inc., breeds and restores native populations of
non-game fish such as boulder darters and blackside dace.  This interesting
program will discuss efforts to keep many species of imperiled fish from
becoming extinct.



4:00 - 5:00 PM              WOODWORKING FOR WILDLIFE - Dead tree limbs
provide homes for many species of wildlife.  Often homeowners do not want
these limbs near their home and wildlife suffers.  However, the Tree City
USA Board will allow participants the chance to build nesting boxes for
their yard.  All supplies will be provided.



5:30  - 6:45 PM             DINNER AND SLIDES - Bring a picnic dinner and
your favorite slides of Steele Creek Park.  There will be a projector for
everyone to show his or her slides.  If you have photographs, bring them and
they will be displayed around the building.



7:00 -8:00 PM               Fungus Among Us - Join Brad Jones, Winged Deer
Park Naturalist, for an entertaining and informative program on mushrooms.
If you have ever found some in the forest and were not sure which were
edible this program is for you.



8:30 - 9:15 PM              Campfire Program - TALES OF THE UNUSUAL -
Storyteller Pat Musselman, will share scary tales around the campfire.
Bring a blanket to sit on.
