Bristol Birders, Michelle and I spent Sunday morning hiking and birding the Breaks Park in Virginia. We hiked several miles of trail and had there been a warbler singing in the park I think we would have heard it. We did find seven Blue-headed Vireos though. After lunch we headed over to Guesses Fork in Buchanan County and I made a quick pass through the reclaimed strip mine sites on top of the mountain. No new migrants but I did find three Blue-winged Teal on a farm pond. Today I had a meeting in Pulaski, VA and was able to check out Gatewood Reservoir (162-acre lake) for waterfowl on my way home. The park section was closed but I managed to scope a portion of the lake and spotted two Bufflehead and a few Ring-necked Ducks. The drive to the lake is miles of uninhabited pine forest and I'm certain I heard a couple of Pine Warblers at the spots I stopped to listen. There were lots of swampy areas in the pine thickets and the habitat was not one you run into very often in SW Virginia. I plan on birding here later in the spring.
