Thu 23 SEP 2004 Westview, Washington Co., TN D. Holt About 7 pm today the pond by the barn on the Powell(?) farm was swarming with swallows scooping water by the hundreds and loading down the wires along the road. Counting in blocks along the wires, I estimated the flock to be on the order of two thousand strong. Except for two possible Cliff Swallows, everything I could see was Tree Swallows. I watched for a half hour or so until the sun set, at which time the swallows all rose up together. I paused for a moment to inspect a couple of sparrows (Savannah), and when I looked up, to my chagrin the swallows had all disappeared! I finally saw about a dozen stragglers heading south. I have no clue as to whether they were going to migrate at night or fly to a roost site for the evening. If the latter, I would love to see that many Tree Swallows going to roost, I bet it would be a spectacular sight.
