Bristol Area Birders,
Roger and Lynda Mayhorn are hosting a Warbler Watch at their ridge top home
on Compton Mountain in Buchanan County VA on Sept. 6th. and on Sept. 13th.
Those wishing to attend may come either or both days. The Mayhorns will
provide a lunch of hot dogs, chicken nuggets, baked beans and chips. Those
attending should bring a covered dish or dessert, their own drinks and a
lawn or camp chair. The warblers pass through all day, but the largest
feeding flock usually passes through just about sunrise - between 7:30 and
8:00. Those attending may arrive as early as they like. For those who wish
to spend the night nearby, the Comfort Inn in Grundy (25 minutes away)
offers a birding rate of $49.95, which includes a continental breakfast. If
you call just ask for the "birding rate". The Comfort Inn phone number is
(276) 935-5050.

We hope to see you there,

Roger and Lynda Mayhorn
Buchanan County VA

Here are the directions to the Mayhorn House.
Follow Rte.19 from Abingdon through Lebanon and Rosedale to Claypool Hill.
At the light at Claypool Hill turn left toward Grundy on Rte. 460 West. Go
19.2 miles, then turn right on Rte. 680 toward Whitewood. Travel 4.8. miles
on 680 crossing Bill Young Mountain.

At the bottom of the mountain you will cross railroad tracks and a small
bridge coming to an intersection. At the intersection turn right on Rte.
638. Go one mile on 638.

Make a left turn onto Rte. 628. You are now traveling up the western side of
Compton Mountain. Go 3.7 miles up Compton Mountain. (1/2 mile of this 3.7 is
unpaved but is a good graveled road, which can be dusty without recent
rain.)

At the top of the mountain you arrive at another intersection. Turn left
onto Rte. 639. You are now only 1.8 miles from the Mayhorn house. After
traveling the ridge road nearing the end of the 1.8 miles you will start
down a steep slope. At the bottom on the right is a white house. At the
driveway is a sign which reads ?MAYHORN DR?. Come on in. You have arrived.

If you prefer a less complicated but longer route (about 25 minutes more)
you can follow Rte. 460 West all the way into the town of Grundy. In the
middle of town just after passing the courthouse you will arrive at a
traffic light, where you must choose to go right or left. Take a right on
Rte 83 East (also called Edgewater Drive). Go 12.2 miles until you see Rte
639 (Compton Mtn Road). Take a right and go 2.3 miles up Compton Mountain.
There you will see ?MAYHORN DR? on your left. Come in. You have arrived.
