On Tuesday, March 16, about noon, Tess Cumbie, Buladean, N.C.; Gilbert Derouen and Reece Jamerson, both of Johnson City; H.P. Langridge, Elizabethton; and Bryan Stevens, Hampton, birded at Austin Springs on Boone Lake near Johnson City in Washington County. Highlights included two Brewer's Blackbirds in a flooded area of puddles in the pasture, a Western Sandpiper found on the wide mud flats and an American Pipit, also on the mudflats. Also present were many Tree Swallows, Wilson's Snipe, Killdeer and a Red-tailed Hawk. The W. Sandpiper was observed from 50-35 feet away, through Langridge's Questar Scope, in good light, at 40 and 80 power. Later, at Musick's Campground, S. Holston Lake, Sullivan Co., we had 2 Red-necked Grebes, 2 Pied-billed Grebes, 1 Horned Grebe, 1 Common Loon, 1 Ruddy Duck, 3 Red-breasted Mergansers and lots of Ring-billed Gulls. At the Weir below S. Holston Dam, had only Buffleheads and 2 Mallards.
