While trying to photograph Red-winged Blackbirds around one of the ponds on Meadowview Golf Course this morning, I heard Virginia Rail kid-dik call notes in two separate locations. The birds never sang a full song, but the call notes are distinctive. Very little cattail marsh habitat left now at Meadowview, except around the ponds on the golf course. Most of the remaining marsh has been overgrown with trees. Also was pleasantly surprised to hear a couple of Swamp Sparrows singing in the marsh. Threw me for a few minutes until I spotted one thru the binocs. The area I was working is the portion just below Eastman Credit Union and HMG Meadowview along Reservoir Road across from the Meadowview Convention Center in Kingsport.
