Area Birders,
Even though the time for the 2005 VSO (Virginia Orithological Society)
Conference has not yet arrived, the Buchanan County Bird Club is gearing up for
its hosting of the 2006 event.
World-renowned birdsong expert Donald E. Kroodsma has accepted our invitation
to be the keynote speaker at the 2006 conference in the Breaks Interstate Park.
Kroodsma, professor emeritus at the Univerity of Massachusetts, has studied
birdsong for more than 30 years, and was recognized as the "reigning authority
on the biology of avian vocal behavior" by the American Ornithologists' Union.
He received the Elliot Coues Award from the AOU in 2003. Professor Kroodsma has
written and co-authored several books, the most recent being "The Singing Life
of Birds". Professor Kroodsma visited the Breaks Park area in 2003, when he and
his son stopped there, while on a bicycle trip from the Atlantic coast to the
Pacific. He liked the area and the people so well he came back again in 2004,
when he and a couple of friends were bicycling from the Atlantic coast to the
Mississippi River. His program for the May 6, 2006 conference promises to be
informative and entertaining, so mark your calendars now.

We look forward to seeing you there,

Roger Mayhorn
