"The Greatest Good," the much talked about U.S. Forest Service Centennial film, will be presented free to the public tonight (Thurs.) at 7 p.m. in the President's Auditorium of the Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon. The center is at the bottom of the hill below Virginia Highlands Community College, just off I-81. The two hour movie is being shown across America to large audiances, including the Smithsonian Environmental Film festival. It was recently screened at Virginia Tech. The local showing is being hosted by the staff of the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, Jefferson National Forests. From the timbered shores of the Pacific Northwest to the marble halls of Washington, D.C., the choices about how we use our rich natural heritage are filled with controversy. Whether it is the protection of endangered species or meeting the needs of a growing public, the fate of the forest is constantly challenged by the constraints of democracy. This breathtaking, high definition documentary commemorates the Forest Service Centennial with the epic story of the struggle to manage the nation's resources amid global change. The film's title comes from the urging of first Forest Chief Gifford Pinchot for a reconciliation of competing interests through analysis of "the greatest good for the greatest number in the long run." The Greatest Good first examines the pre-World War II management policy under Pinchot and then analyzes the conflicts of the post-war era, spurred by the environmental movement of the 1960s. Incorporating the Forest Service's vast treasury of visual images - silent films, Forest Service PSAs, cartoons, paintings, black and white photos, newsreels, TV spots and posters - the film blends historical fact with lighthearted pop culture. The film was produced by Steve Dunsky and Dave Steinke.
