May 31, Walmart-Distribution

After reading Don and David's post, I also visited the area yesterday evening.  I never heard any rail calls, but I did finally flush 2 virginia's from the levy around the 3rd pond.  No sora's were found, but I did find the semi-palmated plover, and 2 greater yellowlegs.  I had to leave about 7:30  pm, so a later visit might produce some rail vocalization.

>David Kirschke did a fine piece of birding this morning to find the rails at WMDC.  Thanks to his timely post, I was able to learn about his sightings and re-visit the area with him this evening.  We found the following:
>
>Virginia Rail (at least 4, third pond)
>Sora (at least 1, third pond)
>Black-bellied Plover
>Semipalmated Plover
>Greater Yellowlegs
>Lesser Yellowlegs
>Semipalmated Sandpiper (4)
>
>The plumage of the Virginia Rails (most, anyway) appeared very dark, suggesting either immature birds or birds moving into adult plumage.  The underparts showed very little reddish, and some blackish mottling was apparent.  At least one bird was extremely dark below, with some whitish on the throat, breast, and belly.
>
>The Sora was quite buffy below and appeared also to be an immature.  I could detect no gray on the throat or breast.  The bill was a muddy yellow color.
