Area Birders, A Swainson's Warbler was heard several times today, 3/18/03 while birding in the Breaks Interstate Park in Dickenson County. My wife, Lynda, and myself, Roger Mayhorn, along with another younger birder found the Swainson's below the Laurel Lake dam, near the Cold Spring trail. We also had fantastic looks at a Black-and-white Warbler that came within 10 feet of us and decided to rest on a Rhododendron branch while he studied us. He gave me great opportunity to get some good video. I don't think I have ever seen one of those fellows sit still for such a length of time. We also heard a few Black-throated Greens, a Northern Parula, Ovenbirds, Yellow-throated Warblers, a couple of Ravens, and Blue-headed Vireos. A Pileated Woodpecker gave us a good view as it worked a nearby tree. A pair of Blue-winged Teal were at the edge of Laurel Lake. Enjoy the birds, Roger Mayhorn Grundy, VA Following is the complete day?s list: American Crow 4 American Goldfinch 6 American Robin 6 Black-throated Green Warbler 4 Black-and-white Warbler 4 Blue-headed Vireo 2 Blue-winged Teal 2 (1 male, 1 female) Canada Goose 1 Carolina Chickadee 2 Carolina Wren 1 Common Grackle 1 Common Raven 2 Chipping Sparrow 8 Downy Woodpecker 1 Eastern Phoebe 1 Mourning Dove 1 Northern Cardinal 1 Northern Parula 1 Ovenbird 3 Pileated Woodpecker 2 Red-shouldered Hawk 2 Red-winged Blackbird 5 ( 1 female) Song Sparrow 2 Swainson?s Warbler 1 Tufted Titmouse 5 Turkey Vulture 14 White-breasted Nuthatch 4 Yellow-shafted Flicker 1 Yellow-throated Warbler 3 ************************************************* BRISTOL BIRDS NET LIST This is a regional birding list sponsored by the Bristol Bird Club to facilitate communications between birders and bird clubs of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.
