BLOWING ROCK, N.C. -- A two-month survey says there's good news on the Blue
Ridge Parkway for an owl species that's worrying biologists. The northern
saw-whet owl is considered a species of concern by the federal government,
meaning it may need to be the target of conservation measures.

But parkway officials say the survey appears to show the owl's population is
doing well along the scenic road. Parkway biologist Bob Cherry says the
birds appear to be in the same spots they occupied 30 years ago.

Other bird studies are under way along the parkway to see how the animals
are doing in the face of spreading development. The parkway region is home
to several rare plant and animal species.
