September 8, 2004

western Greene County, including
Wal-Mart Distribution Center (WMDC);
Joachime Bible Refuge unit of Lick Creek Bottoms Wildlife Management
Area (JBR);
Green Road;
Sapp Road;
Baughard Hill Road;
various other roads near the above.

It rained birds in Greene County today, and unfortunately I could not
get out to bird until after 5:00 p.m. However, from about 5:20 until
dusk, I found a very solid assortment of birds, both non-passerine and
passerine.  Here are the highlights:

Great Blue Heron (3);
Green Heron (3);
Cattle Egret (WMDC);
Wood Duck (68--65 Green Road, 2 WMDC, 1 Sapp Road);
Northern Harrier (JBR);
Sora (Sapp Road);
Black-bellied Plover (WMDC) (still in breeding plumage and stunningly
beautiful in the fading light of evening);
Semipalmated Plover (6 WMDC);
Killdeer (48);
Lesser Yellowlegs (45 WMDC);
Solitary Sandpiper (3--2 Green Road, 1 Baughard Hill Road);
Semipalmated Sandpiper (2 Baughard Hill Road);
Least Sandpiper (7--5 Sapp Road, 2 Baughard Hill Road);
Pectoral Sandpiper (29 WMDC);
Eurasian Collared-Dove (Highway 348 behind West Greene High
School--adjacent to the railroad track);
Eastern Kingbird (5);
Northern Rough-winged Swallow (22);
Bank Swallow (Sapp Road);
Barn Swallow (8);
Northern Waterthrush (Sapp Road) (the bird flushed from the marshy
meadow below the road near the creek and lit on a wire, where it called
loudly and remained perched for over a minute);
Common Yellowthroat (6 Sapp Road);
Blue Grosbeak (5);
Indigo Bunting (25).
