I am continuing to see nighthawks on a regular basis in Shady Valley. As I do not live in the valley itself but up a hollow, I get the opportunity only when spending some time in the more open "lowlands". Last week I observed 6-8 of them at the junction of Griffin Hollow Rd. and Hwy 133 over a hay field. And, while driving, several individuals in the Crandull community over open fields near Beaverdam Creek. Separately, I observed a barred owl fly across Johnson Hollow Rd and land in a tree bordering the road. Excellent, if brief, view as I drove by. I hear the barred owls regularly but seldom see them.
