A Cliff Swallow nest from a previous breeding season was discovered 18 March in Shady Valley, Johnson County, TN. by Wallace Coffey and Chris O'Bryan. As far as we know, this is the first nesting record for Johnson County. It may be the highest elevation nesting record for this species in the state. The nest was located underneath the upstream side of the U.S. 421 bridge over Beaverdam Stream. There was evidence of a few other possible nest-building attempts nearby but nothing to indicate more than the one nest had been fully constructed. This nest was likely from last year's breeding season but there is nothing to assure that. It did not appear to be weather worn. This species is rare in spring migration in the valley and I know of no Cliff Swallows seen during the breeding season. Let's go birding....
