The Shady Valley CBC will be held Thursday, Jan. 1, 2008, with Rob Biller as compiler. A traditional gathering will take place at the Raceway Restaurant for biscuits, coffee or full breakfast starting at 7:00 a.m. Those wanting to attend and catch up with a field party they can accompany, may do so at that time. Coming from Bristol on HWY 421 we meet at the restaurant at the crossroads (flashing traffic light) across from the silo. The restaurant is in the back of the store so you may pull around back and enter the restaurant through the French doors on the porch or go thru the store and enter the French doors in the back. I telephoned Karen Eller, owner and manager of the Raceway Restaurant, this morning and she said she would be open at that time. She will have extra help to get us out early enough to begin our count. She usually has an open log fire in the fireplace of the restaurant and everyone enjoys the warmth, hot drinks and anticipation of the day's count. Fred Behrend of Elizabethton conducted the first ever Christmas Bird Count in Shady Valley in 1962. Count day temperatures will be high 41 F and low 29 F with clear weather. See ya in Shady Valley for breakfast at 7 a.m. Let's go birding . . . . Wallace Coffey Bristol, TN
