Fellow Birders, Yesterday, Dec 7, two members of the Buchanan County Bird Club, Johnnie and Betty Ratliff, had a Selasphorous hummingbird visiting their window feeder. The couple lives in a low lying area near a stream and have had hummers visiting their feeders sporadically even through Oct. and Nov. Two hummers visited their feeders yesterday several times, and Johnnie was able to get a photo of one. The photo, while not great, was good enough to see that the bird is a Selasphorous. Johnnie, who has been feeding hummers for years from sometimes as many as twenty feeders, said that one of the birds was "the most beautiful hummingbird I have ever seen." Evidently that bird is a male. I (Roger Mayhorn) and Ed Talbott were on hand early this morning with digital camera and digital video camera ready to capture images of either of the birds. Unfortunately, the birds did not show. Perhaps it was because the temperatures were in the mid-twenties. We are still hopeful that one of the birds may make another appearance. Enjoy the birds, Roger Mayhorn Grundy, VA Buchanan County Bird Club ************************************************* BRISTOL BIRDS NET LIST This is a regional birding list sponsored by the Bristol Bird Club to facilitate communications between birders and bird clubs of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.
