Birders: An immature, male Rufous Humming bird is coming to a feeder in Elizabehton, Carter County. Dave Worley and Wallace Coffey visited the feeder early today (2/19) and watched it for more than an hour. It is a rainbow of beauty and we enjoyed it tremendously. It is coming to the home of Carroll Mottern who lives at 115 Reynolds Road just off the old U.S. 19 (Bristol Highway) and runs downhill past the famous Slagle's Pasture Blue Grass stage. Carroll told Coffey Sunday afternoon (2/17) that the bird has been coming to his yard since early fall 2001 and he has thought all along that it was a female Ruby-throated. He had taken down his hummer feeders last fall when he noticed a hummer still zipping around his yard so he put a feeder back out. He was surprised to learn that it is a Rufous He said he knew what a Rufous was because he has a book on hummingbird but didn't know that any other species occurs in this region. We learned of this bird when Betty Poole of Bristol, Virginia, who has been hosting two Rufous hummers this winter, heard a caller on John Quaintance's WJCW talk show. He asked how the hummingbird was doing. She did not know the name of the caller but thought he must be somewhere in Carter County. With the help of the talk show host and Herndon Chapter birder Bryan Stevens, Mr. Mottern was located and welcomed us to see the bird. If you want to see this bird, please call (423) 542-5574 and make arrangements in advance. Please do not just walk up on his place because all of this is new to him. Bryan, thanks for your good help.
