Duffield, VA -- Roy D. Powers, Jr., 75, Duffield in Scott County, VA, passed
away peacefully at his home Sunday, March 29, 2015. He was one of the most
recognized cave protection authorities and bat conservationists in America.

Roy was a founding member of several caving organizations, most notably the
American Cave Conservation Association. He served a total of 19 years on Roy
Powers.jpgthe Virginia Cave Board (4 years as Chairman), and was appointed
by 6 different governors. A well-known conservationist, Roy worked most of
his life to protect caves and their resources. He was recognized as the
leading authority on cave gates by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, USDA
Forest Service, The Nature Conservancy and many other federal, state and
non-governmental agencies. His gates protect many species in 18 different
states and his designs have been applied to gates around the world.

He was a recipient of the President's Stewardship Award from the Nature
Conservancy in 1991. In 1996, he was presented with Bat Conservation
International's Distinguished Service Award by Merlin Tuttle and was
featured in Bat Conservation International Magazine, Volume 15, NO. 4 Winter

Roy was born on May 4, 1939 to Roy D. Powers, Sr. and Gladys Little Powers
in Abingdon, VA. He was a graduate of William King High School and Virginia
Tech. In 1962, he met and married Radford University Student Carole
Shiflett, his wife of 53 years. Roy Powers was an Associate Professor of
Computer and Electronic Engineering Technology at Mountain Empire Community
College for 32 years. He previously taught at Tri-Cities State Technical
Institute and Virginia Highlands Community College.

He is survived by his wife Carole of Duffield, VA and daughters, Lisa Powers
of Nashville, TN, Susan Powers of Chilhowie, VA and Tracy Hadry and husband
Chris of Havre de Grace, Maryland; his brother, James Randolph (Randy)
Powers and wife Cindy of Fruitland Park, Florida and his uncle Robert Leo
Powers of Chilhowie, VA. He is predeceased by his parents Roy D. Powers,
Sr., 12/2/1999 and Gladys Little Powers, 11/20/2002. Roy Powers was a
teacher, a mentor, and a father figure to many. He was truly an amazing man.
We hope his legacy of Cave Conservation will live on through his many
colleagues and friends.

His daughter, Lisa, will be speaking this year at the Spring Roan Mountain
Naturalist Rally on May 4, 2013. She is a leading herpetologist in
Tennessee. While there is a real place called Froghaven Farm, Froghaven
Farm is more the collection of the diverse ideas and talents of Lisa. She
is known for her contract biology, web design, photography, educational
programs and educational material design which are some of the services
offered by Froghaven Farm.

A memorial service will be held at the Goodloe Center at Mountain Empire
Community College, Big Stone Gap, VA, Saturday, April 18 at 2:00 p.m. The
family will have a memory board and guests are asked to bring photos and
stories to post and share. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations
be made in memory of Roy to the American Cave Conservation Association, 119
