Gil Derouen and I birded water areas in Sullivan Cty today. Summary: Steele Creek ParkWe hoped to find the Ross's Goose that had been seen there, but we didn't see it. If it is still around, we expect we got there (8:30 a.m.) after it left with other geese to feed in some nearby field.
Paddle Creek Green-winged Teal 1 Ruddy Duck 3 Ring-necked Duck 3 Am. Kestrel 1 Kingfisher 1 Weir Dam Wigeon 12 Bufflehead 25 S. Holston Dam overlooka raft of 65 ducks, too far out for us to be able to identify most of them--it included 20 Canvasbacks
Rooty Branch and Pemberton Rds Gadwall 6 on the beaver pond on Rooty Branch Wild Turkey 18Ross's Goose 1 on Pemberton Rd. with a large flock of Canadas by the long cattle feeding troughs
Colebrook Rd.Bufflehead 1 on the second little cattle pond---very unexpected place
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 1 Hwy 44 on second pond north of Darter's Store Green-winged Teal 1 Musick's Campground Horned Grebe 8 Pied-billed Grebe 2 Ruddy Duck 1 Ring-billed Gull 12 Wash. Cty., VA Hearst Rd. Am. Kestrel 2 Middlebrook Lake Canvasback 1 female Red-breasted Merganser 1 male Pied-billed Grebe 2 Great Blue Heron 3 Coot 8 Cooper's Hawk 1Ring-billed Gull 600 There were none when we arrived at 2:05. They began to trickle in--I counted 80, then strings of gulls flew in from the NW--I counted 100 more, then another 200, then more large flocks that I estimated to be a little over 200 more. By then, they were moving around, some flying up, then settling down--a more accurate count appeared futile.
