When I arrived at Carver's Gap (5512 ft elevation) at 10:45, the first
thing I saw was the woodcock walking across the road that leads toward
the rhododendron gardens. He was doing his bobbing strut, like a
staggering drunk. Quite unusual for mid morning, out in the open, on
a bright sunny day. He continued across the entrance to the parking
lot and on into the grassy / shrubby area beyond.
