It is of note that both South Holston Lake and
Watauga Lake reached full level with Watauga
hitting stride about the first of May and South
Holston about the first of June.

Both lakes were full by the first of June.

South Holston may be steady at this date but
Watauga has experienced about a four foot
drawdown during the past month.

This may produce early habitat in the Roan
Creek area of Watauga as fall shorebirds
and water birds begin their migration in the
last week or so of this month. Conditions
at Roan Creek may be excellent as we
enter the fall data period of August 1.

Musicks Campground area of Spring Creek
at South Holston did not get early and good
exposure to write home about last summer and
the birding was not the best. There is still a
chance a significant drawdown is coming but
don't bet your binoculars on that.

It is obvious from the black line on the Douglas
Lake guide that last year's drawdown was not
optimum for Rankin Bottom and the levels stayed
well into the trees and above the normal flood
line, Note that the red line for 2010 shows that
TVA is tracking right at the flood line and in the
trees and other vegetation to date. Are we
starting to see a trend at Rankin Bottom that
suggest that dramatic and sprawling mudflats
will not be back this year. When will they ?

The Austin Springs area is flooded as Boone
Lake hovers at full pool. High water at Austin
Springs is expected for about two more months
until TVA begins to draw down the impoundment
about the first week of September. This is
pretty standard for Boone Lake. It wasn't always.

  Let's go birding . . . .
