Hey folks, This afternoon, Jan. 01, 2004, while looking for sparrows at the Elizabethton Sewage Treatment Plant, I heard what I at first thought was a Blue Jay doing a poor imitation of a Red-shouldered Hawk. Imagine my surprise when I saw the hawk with orangey underparts and black and white banded tail ! I don't know what it was yelling about, but the crows that came to look didn't stay to bother it. It sat in a tree near the river behind the brushyard for several minutes, long enough to get a scope on it. The feathers on the back had quite extensive pale edging, and the face was very pale, appearing "frosty". That was the closest to my home (in Central) I have ever seen a Red-shouldered Hawk. An auspicious beginning to my year list!
