September 3, 2007 [posting date: September 4, 2007] Cocke County: Dutch Bottoms Observers: Don Miller and Michael Sledjeski, in canoe Observed yesterday: 20 shorebird species, plus a few other notables-- Wood Duck Northern Pintail (2) Double-crested Cormorant (17) Great Blue Heron (28) Great Egret (43) Black-crowned Night-Heron Bald Eagle (2 adults) Ring-billed Gull Black-bellied Plover American Golden-Plover Semipalmated Plover (8) Killdeer (175+) Greater Yellowlegs (12) Lesser Yellowlegs (40) Solitary Sandpiper (3) Willet (2) Spotted Sandpiper (3) Red Knot (juvenile, at point-blank range) Sanderling (3) Semipalmated Sandpiper (10+) Western Sandpiper (15) Least Sandpiper (12+) Baird's Sandpiper (juvenile, at point-blank range) Pectoral Sandpiper (23) Stilt Sandpiper (4) Buff-breasted Sandpiper (3) Short-billed Dowitcher (at least 1) Wilson's Phalarope unidentified peeps (1-2 dozen) In general, shorebird numbers were down in comparison with last week, though species diversity was obviously high.
