Rankin Bottoms & Ten Islands, Cocke county; 8/15/08, 5:00-8:00 PM, by car & canoe
Douglas Lake elevation: 976 ft.Leslie G. and I checked out the well-drained southern end of Rankin Bottoms, then joined Rick Knight near the northern end, where there's still a broad expanse of mud. Rick & I then went by canoe downlake into the Ten Islands section, still flooded, but shallow. We returned for a closer look at the Rankin Bottoms mudflats, which had a greater concentration of shorebirds.
