Signs on the building and property at the location of the Raceway Restaurant (at the silo on the corner) in Shady Valley, TN have given some birders the idea that the restaurant has closed and out of business. I passed the restaurant yesterday (Wednesday) about 2 p.m. and everything did look a little bleak. It appeared to be closed if only for Wednesday afternoon. A phone call to Karen Eller, who owns and operates the Raceway Restaurant, learned that the restaurant is not out of business. It has been a favorite eating and meeting place for birders for many years, dating back to about 2000, and even when she called the business the Cranberry Café and it was located across the road in the building on the opposite corner where her restaurant featured a large stone fireplace with continuous hot wood fires daily in winter. Karen said two signs, visible from the road, advertise that the owner of her current building has placed the property for sale and the signs state the building is available. It is owned by Nichols Peter of Clearwater, FL who moved to the area in January 2006 and bought the property as an investment. He later moved back to Florida. She says she intends to continue operating the restaurant depending upon who buys the property, what they Intend to do with it, and what kind of lease she would need to sign for her restaurant space of the building. Of interest is the fact that the US 421 Country Store (white corner store) that caters to hikers and motor bikers is likewise for sale. Wallace Coffey Bristol, TN
