A couple of Northern Saw-whet Owl records:

27 Aug 2012 -- John Shumate III, observed one at close
range in his yard in Shady Valley, Johnson County, TN at
about 2,880 feet. He had turned his cat out on the porch
when a few short toot calls of the owl were heard just above
his head. He was able to get a flashlight beam on the perched
bird and had a good look. This is a new species for Shady Valley
and possibly a new species for Johnson County.

21 Sept 2012 -- Eric Harold and a friend had a bird just off
Rhododendron Trail at Sullivan Swamp (across Massie Gap)
in Grayson Highlands State Park of Grayson County, VA.
This is a bit more than a mile SE of Mount Rogers. The tiny
owl -- more expected at this elevation and date -- was found
at 2:30 p.m. at an elevation of about 4,900 feet.
