The 2011 Great Backyard Bird Count took place across the nation during the last few days (Friday, Feb 18, through Monday, Feb 21). More than 30 Bristol-Birds Net area communities are listed with counts turned in for the annual four-day event that engaged bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds were across the continent. Anyone could participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It took as little as 15 minutes on one day, or as long as an observer liked each day of the event. The following is the known number of counts turned in by communities in the Bristol-Birds Net area. Nearly 200 counts were made and reported by area birders: Johnson City 25 Jonesboro 17 Bristol 15 Elizabethton 13 Morristown 13 Abingdon 12 Big Stone Gap 10 Marion 9 Kingsport 8 Rogersville 8 Limestone 7 Blountville 6 North Tazewell 6 Newport 5 Richlands 4 Saltville 4 Flag Pond 3 Grundy 3 Pound 3 Rural Retreat 3 Telford 3 White Pine 3 Cleveland 2 Lebanon 2 Swords Creek 2 Cedar Bluff 1 Clintwood 1 Erwin 1 Pennington Gap 1 Roan Mountain 1 Wise 1
