We learned this morning that James Bell banded the Musick's Campground Rufous Hummingbird in Pass Christian, Mississippi which is on the Gulf coast a bit west of Biloxi and Gulfport at 8:00 on 10 Jan 2009 According to Mark Armstrong, (shown in photo at left) who captured the bird on Mae Musick's porch and is the bander of record for this recovery, James Bell was able to determine that the Rufous was a "second year" (SY) bird when he banded it. This meant she was hatched in the breeding season of 2008. All birds known to have hatched in 2008 became aged as in their second calendar of life on 1 Jan 2009. On 1 Jan 2010 she will become a "third year" bird wherever she may be. Bell is a prominent hummer bander who lives at Picayune, MS. He is a trained member of the Hummer/Bird Study Group, Inc. a Non-Profit Organization founded by Bob and Martha Sargent in 1993, dedicated to the study and preservation of hummingbirds and other neo-tropical migrants (songbirds). Bob Sargeant was an annual fall banquet speaker at the Bristol Bird Club several years ago. We will track the bird carefully and hope it remains at Musick's Campground so it can be counted on the Bristol Christmas Bird Count the Sunday after Christmas. It would be the third year for the species with Rufous hummers found on the 2001 and 2002 Bristol CBC. An Allen's Hummer was on the count in 1997 -- the first Virginia state record for an Allen's. If you wish, you may go to the Coast Rat blog site at: http://coastrat.wordpress.com/2009/01/12/hummingbird-trapping-such-an-adventure/ and read a complete accounting with extensive photos of the Musick's Campground female Rufous Hummingbird being banded Jan. 10, 2009 at the residence in Pass Christian, MS. I would have post the photos and info here but the site has a copywrite and would be a lot of trouble to get approved. Let's go birding . . . . Wallace Coffey Bristol, TN
