Hello - I received a call from Allen Trently tonight reporting that he had a singing Mourning Warbler today on Grassy Ridge in the same location that he had the bird last year. He first heard it singing and then saw the bird. He only heard and saw the single bird. He has not giving up hope on the possibly of a nest. He will check all avenues of hope next trip up. To get to Grassy Ridge drive up and park at Carver's Gap on Roan Mountain. Hike the Appalachian Trail (south) for approx. 1.5 miles until you get to the Grassy Ridge / Appalachian Trail intersection. Turn up Grassy Ridge and the bird was located just a few yards up the trail. The hike is somewhat strenuous as you will go up and down 3 or 4 times...and there is the trip back. Allen is working for the Southern Appalachian Conservancy and is currently staying on the back side of Roan Mt (about 1.5 miles into North Carolina) at the Conservancy's Mountain cabin. He asked me to include the phone number at the cabin (828-688-4382) and invited anyone who was interested in finding the bird to give a call and he will give you the latest information he has on the bird and is willing to help relocate the bird with the interested parties. He has no answering machine so you need a little luck or possibly call in advance to plan a trip with him. He is usually there in the evenings (Wed-Sat/Sun).
