Area Birders: In addition to shorebirds using puddles in Shady Valley, Johnson Co., TN, I searched more extensively today. Additional birds were found along the banks of the Beaverdam Creek channel. Elevation here is about 2,800 feet in the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains. Here is today's (May 3) list: Solitary Sandpipers 42 (another Shady Valley maxium individual count) Greater Yellowlegs 1 Lesser Yellowlegs 1 Spotted Sandpiper 2 Least Sandpiper 1 (down from nine on Monday) Canada Goose 9 (one pair with 2 goslings not discovered before today) Great Blue Heron 1 (Quarry Bog) Wood Duck 3 The puddle from rain in the flooded field across from McQueen Farm Equipment on U.S. 421 near Orchard Rd. is drying fast and may be gone in a day or two. I checked it today at 9:30 a.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. It appared to drop significantly in about eight hours. Let's go birding.....
